STRAW BALE CONSTRUCTION

S3Future - A sustainable not for profit private initiative

The structural capability of straw bales is surprisingly good. In the loadbearing (‘Nebraska’ style) straw bale method, walls of up to 3 stories have been constructed. Most straw bale construction uses a frame of timber or steel for the building structure to comply with the construction code (available in some countries around the world). There are many examples of multistorey buildings in framed straw bale construction. The straw must be kept dry throughout the whole building process until it is plastered.
