Edible Gardens

An edible garden contains flowers, herbs, seeds, berries and plants that you can eat. It does not have to be large — you can start small with a few pots, containers, or even a window box with a few herbs.

Gardening has many health and therapeutic benefits and can be enjoyed by everyone. People with disabilities, older people and children can find it especially rewarding to spend time in the garden tending plants and growing their own food.

Plant edible gardens, not grass!

Having an orchard is a great project that has many benefits. It provides fresh and free food, and you can be sure of the origin of what you consume. If each person started a small garden at home, the world would be a very different place.

Not having space is not an excuse — you can make orchards in pots, vertical orchards, and all kinds of adaptations for a small patio or balcony.

Benefits of having an edible garden at home

Enjoy Better Tasting Food — Grow vegetables and herbs in their natural form and discover their true flavour, colour and freshness — even raw from the garden.
Save Money on Groceries — Market fruits and vegetables cost up to 50% more and often contain pesticides. Your own garden saves money and reduces trips to the store.
Improve Your Family's Health — Home-grown produce is free of toxic chemicals and has a higher content of vitamins and minerals than commercially grown food.
Increase Spirituality & Wellbeing — Tilling soil, planting seeds and watching life grow helps improve quality of life and brings a sense of peace and connection with nature.
Reduce Environmental Impact — No chemicals or pesticides means cleaner water cycles, healthier soil, better air quality and fewer respiratory diseases.
Get Outdoor Exercise — Planting, weeding, watering and harvesting add purposeful physical activity to your day — and kids can join in too.

Creating your own edible garden is a very rewarding experience. Growing your own food, using it in your cooking and enjoying the health benefits of fresh produce is fulfilling — and you don't even need much space. A single plant pot on a windowsill can grow fresh herbs.
